A film portrait by makers Patrick Minks, Jaap Veldhoen and Wouter Snip in which Herman Hertzberger and his successor at AHH, Laurens Jan ten Kate, are followed during the transformation of the former Centraal Beheer building in Apeldoorn.
Filmmakers Patrick Minks, Jaap Veldhoen and Wouter Snip followed Herman Hertzberger and his successor at AHH, Laurens Jan ten Kate, on the transformation project of the former Centraal Beheer building in Apeldoorn. The result is a film portrait in which we get to know Hertzberger as a driven, humorous and modest man whose vision of what architecture means for people and society is still topical.
Hertzberger: "It has been the idea from the very beginning that those units of space would be suitable for a different interpretation. That's the idea of Structuralism, that you make something that lends itself to being used in different ways."
It is for this reason that Hertzberger calls the 1972 transformation of 'Centraal Beheer' from abandoned office building into a contemporary, sustainable place for living, working and recreation 'the proof of the pudding'. But are today's times still receptive to his vision? What prevails? Profitable square metres or space for people? 'The Proof of the Pudding by Herman Hertzberger' is a production by JURA Film Theater & Debat and a film by Patrick Minks (scenario, editing, direction), Jaap Veldhoen (camera, co-direction) and Wouter Snip (production).
